I dont have many photographs showing the left side of the building, but here is one again showing the Richard Healy building abuting Denholms. Richard Healy was a high end store( founded as a furrier) which carried expensive womens wear and accessories as well as it's fur selection.. To the left of that was Wallgreens pharmacy. Denholms purchased the heally building in 1970 and had plans on expanding into that space.
Ah! This explains those mysterious bricked-up bits on the side of the Denholm building facing Chatham Street. Now if only I could step inside that postcard and go shopping. (I was a Galleria mall-rat, and as much as I loved that place, I can now see that it helped kill Denholms and much of downtown Worcester)
ReplyDeleteYes those bricked up bits were where they had broken through... I worked in the mall as well, and I do miss having some activity downtown.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting!
That is a fascinating photograph! Well before the time I spent in Worcester but when I walked by this block on my way to work in the 80's (on Franklin St), I could see in the ruins the old world that was once Worcester and I felt as though I had missed something fine!
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI don't mean to spam your blog, but I thought you might be interested to know that I just posted a Denholm advertising jug on Ebay. You can find it by searching Worcester mini jug
I'am a child of the 60's & 70's Worcester, My family owned a Main ST business-seen in this picture- Toupin's - I have great memories of working there, running over to Denholm & Filenes to shop. Richard Healy was where my mother shopped. I found this site while googling for Healy's . I found some jewelry my father bought for my mother and am trying to find out more about it,, it's to bad Worcester Center was ever built ! People should have fought to keep main ST alive !, if we knew now , what we thought we knew back then,, I still visit Worcester now and then,as many family members still live there, last time there they were tearing down Worcester Center,, Main ST lasted 80 yrs and Worcester Center lasted only 35 yrs , going down hill the past 20 ! History speaks for itself.
ReplyDeleteBring back the old downtown Worcester, Mass !
